Who We Are

We are a non partisan, non-profit, grassroots group of small networks of citizens across Ohio dedicated to educating ourselves and others about deep shale petroleum production.
Our funding comes from individuals who are concerned about the risks inherent in a heavy industry coming into their community. We are affiliated with state-wide and national groups whose mission is to protect various aspects of the environment or to research health effects of various types of industrial or corporate activity. With the aim of openness and transparency, this website will share links with all organizations we're affiliated with.
Our mission: We promote sustainable energies and protect our basic needs and rights to clean land, air and water.
To that end, we collect scientifically based information about petroleum production with a particular emphasis on shale gas and oil drilling and production and freely disseminate this information. We do our best to check sources to find information as reliable as possible. We aim to disseminate to as wide an audience as possible accurate information about energy sources, focusing on all the aspects of petroleum extraction and its impacts on communities, environment and health primarily because of the shale drilling boom in Ohio. We value our communities, our environment, our health, and believe that for citizens to make good judgments, complete, accurate information is essential. Our investigations have led us into related areas such as public policy, economics, media, and many areas of science. While we are not experts, we search out multiple sources, unbiased experts always seeking to confirm any information before we pass it along.
We are registered with the state of Ohio as a nonprofit organization. Any person who shares our values and goals, which are peaceful education about all the complex issues surrounding energy development, is welcome to join our efforts. We are an entirely volunteer group, with no paid staff. We do have a membership application form and request a membership fee of $20 for an individual or $30 for a family, to help support our printing costs and other expenses related to public meetings, etc. Formal membership application is not necessary to join our meetings. Contact info@concernedcitizensohio.org for more information.
We support public gatherings whose aim is to educate. While we are not primarily a lobbying group, individual members are encouraged to educate our local elected officials, as well as our state and national elected officials, all our public servants, as well as other organizations whose stated mission is protection of the environment. Meetings of active members of our group are held for sharing information or planning public meetings. Public meetings may include joining rallies and marches, which will include speakers and informational handouts, as well as public informational meetings. At all times, we will respect various points of view and require all Concerned Citizens Ohio participants to behave in a respectful manner.
We believe that government is created to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens who elect that government, and that the power of the government arises from the consent of the governed. Therefore, we are also committed to educating our neighbors about how government is functioning regarding basic protections in the industrial process of petroleum and shale gas extraction and the formulation of energy policy.
We recognize that individuals who participate in our sponsored activities may also choose to participate in activities with other related groups whose mission is different from those of Concerned Citizens Ohio. We ask members to keep in mind all the goals and values described above whenever identifying yourself as affiliated with CCO.
